Great quote of the day
I enjoy reading the news. Fact. Not only do I enjoy it, but I think it’s one of the most important parts of my day. Usually, I get to school a little early and read through the paper copy of the NY Times provided to our school’s library. If I have time, I check out the local newspaper.
This morning, I was sitting in a comfortable chair with a cup of coffee flipping through the NY Times when I was approached by a young lady who you could call a law school friend. She looks at me… looks at the paper… and says, “You couldn’t pay me to read the NY Times.” Clearly, this comment wasn’t an anti-reading comment. It was an anti-NY Times comment.
That was the end of the conversation. And she walked away. I took a minute to think through what just happened and it made me realize how ridiculous some people are. What does that even mean? What does, “You couldn’t pay me to read the NY Times” mean? Dude, you’re a 23-year-old law student. You probably shouldn’t write off the most noteworthy newspaper in the world with such ease.
Oh well… made for a good quote and some good storytelling later in the day.

A year ago yesterday I was standing in a hotel suite that had been rented out by a US Congressman to celebrate his own victory that night. The returns flooded in and cheers were heard up and down the hallways in similar suites. The presidential election hadn’t been announced, but you could tell that most news outlets were close to announcing Barack Obama’s victory. Without realizing it, I found myself positioned in front of a TV standing beside an 85-year-old black woman. We made small talk briefly, but I could tell she was anxious and preoccupied with what was on the TV. I quit with the pleasantries and turned my focus back to the TV. At that moment, the above video flashed across the TV. Suddenly, I felt an arm around my waist. I turned. The woman beside me was grabbing me for support. She couldn’t stop crying. Frankly, it was one of the most touching moments in my life. She finally caught her breath and made one remark, “Never in my life…”
I joke a whole bunch on this blog. I make fun of a ton of people. I put up pictures of Kim Kardashian every Friday. And find videos of wretched people singing Miley Cyrus in front of their computers. But I ran across this video earlier and felt compelled to post something serious for once. Love him, hate him, kind of like him, kind of dislike him — it’s impossible to argue against what election day 2008 meant for the US.
Cheers to that, America.
You can put this on my vacation list. Finland, you weren’t close to the top until I saw this. Now you might be #1.
