Downsizing and Simplifying

Recently, the Wall Street Journal ran an article about downsizing your closet and simplifying your life.  This is part of my 2012 resolution list.  For a while now, I have been thinking a lot more about getting rid of 95 percent of the crap I have and just having a few really nice things.  This applies to not only the stuff I wear, but stuff around the house.  As Reckner has been expanding the amount of stuff we have over the course of the last few months, I’d like to scale it way back.

For instance, I have about 12 blue button dress shirts.  I’d like to get rid of all of them and buy one nice one (seen here — Sid Mashburn).  In general, I’d like to get rid of a lot of my shirts that I never wear and sub in about five nice ones.  Preferably all from Sid Mashburn.  For a while, I had a tons of ill-fitting suits and sports coats.  I finally got rid of all of them and bought two J. Crew Ludlow suits.  That was my first experience in really downsizing.

I’d also like to get rid almost every pair of shoes I have.  I told Reckner the other night that for the rest of my life there are only five pairs of shoes I would need at any given time.  Numbers 1 and 5 are expensive, but last a really long time.  The rest are all relatively cheap and easy to replace.

(1) Alden Cordovan loafers — they last 10 years so this won’t be hard — Reckner got me some of these as a wedding gift.

(2) Clark desert boots — in no other color than the one shown

(3) LL Bean bluchers

(4) Vans - one or two pairs; adequately worn in

(5) Gucci bit loafers - black.  Dress shoes.

I’ve been putting stuff up on eBay recently in an attempt to get rid of some stuff.  Let me know if you want to reap the benefits of my downsizing goal.
