Music I’ve recently listened to
For some odd reason, people seem to enjoy when I post music that I’ve recently listened to. 2012 has been spectacularly dull so far. That being said, I’ve gone back and found a few treasures that I’d never listened to. Here’s a list:
(1) Discovery - “LP” (2009)
Simply put, this is a fun album to listen to. The keyboardist from Vampire Weekend is in the band. It’s pretty funky and quirky. It even includes a new rendition of “I Want You Back.”
(2) Bon Iver - “Bon Iver” (2011)
Obviously, I listened to this album last year. However, I really gave Bon Iver the short end of the stick in my year-end reviews and rankings. Part of that deals with the fact that most of the music I really enjoyed in 2011 was high octane and full of serious jamming. Bon Iver is much more laid back. Thus, when I began making my list I didn’t put them on it. And I apologize. It’s a truly great album, and I’ve listened to it a lot in the last few weeks.
(3) Neon Indian - “Era Extrana” (2011)
This was another album I overlooked in 2011. In part, it’s because I didn’t listen to it until the very end of the year. But it’s good. Really good. One thing I’ve noticed about myself, that my friends Chenders doesn’t like, is that I’m moving towards liking more electronica-type music. I still love really good music, but last year’s albums that left indelible marks almost all had funky electronic tunes laced throughout the album. This being one.
(4) David Bowie - “Live Santa Monica ‘72” (2008)
The date I found that this was actually released was 2008, but I’m not sure if that was a re-release. Regardless, it’s a great Bowie show with a Velvet Underground cover. Wrap your mind around that.
(5) The Smiths - “The Queen Is Dead” (1986)
Until recently, I used to be really, really ambivalent about The Smiths. Hmm… Maybe I’d even say I didn’t like them because I thought that people who liked The Smiths were kind of annoying. That has changed with my overall attitude towards 80’s music. I obviously really like over-the-top 80’s music (e.g., Huey Lewis, Mr. Mister, etc.). However, I’ve recently grown to really appreciate more substantive 80’s music. Especially, British music from the 80’s. ”The Queen Is Dead” is a pretty spot-on British 80’s album. And I like it. A lot.
